Bernice has noticed she encounters more deaf children of late. Being a huge fan of language, I already had a course on sign language on my computer. I looked into it years ago with the intention to start a school for deaf children, grown ups and anyone who is interested in learning sign language. This idea came from a place of love. I am a social worker and, having worked with children, deaf people and people who greatly benefit from learning sign language, I have also noticed this: not only will it allow deaf people to make a deeper conversation with someone who before did not know sign language, but especially young children benefit from learning sign language (as young as toddlers), as it helps them communicate and cognitively speaking learning a new language creates new neurological pathways. The official sign language Ghana uses is American Sign Language, which, I have noticed, is very different from Dutch sign language. So I too have to relearn this new language and teach through videos. It is our goal to start a school for deaf people (perhaps a boarding school) and I am sure we will be able to accomplish this. How amazing would it be if a deaf person can express him or herself, being understood like anyone else, and if teachers, a boss and colleagues learn sign language, so that a deaf person has the same prospects as a hearing person?
